Diogo Jota’s son will join mascots as his former clubs Liverpool and Wolves face each other

Both sons of late Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota will join the mascots at Anfield when Liverpool will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in Premier League on Saturday, the club confirmed.

Portuguese forward Jota, who played for both Premier League clubs, died in a car crash alongside his younger brother in July in northwestern Spain. He was 28.

Jota made his entry to the English Premier League through Wolves when he joined them from Atletico Madrid in 2017 on a loan. Later, he made the move permanent.

In three years with Wolves, Jota scored 44 goals and gave 13 assists across all competitions playing in 131 games.

He then signed a five-year deal in 2020 with Liverpool, where he won the league title earlier this year. In five years at Liverpool, Jota scored 65 goals and gave 22 assists in 182 games.

His best season came in 2021-22 when he scored 21 goals and provided six assists in 55 games.

Saturday’s match marks the first time Liverpool and Wolves have met since Jota’s death. Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso and her two sons, Dinis and Duarte, were present for the Premier League home openers for both Liverpool and Wolves in August.

Liverpool also permanently retired his jersey number 20 following his death.

Both teams are having a poor season at the moment in respect to their previous seasons performance.

Defending champions Liverpool are placed sixth in the league table with 29 points and are ten points behind the leaders Arsenal. They have won three out of their last five games.

The club also saw a brief fall-off between coach Arne Slot and talisman Mo Salah before normalcy was restored.

While on the other hand, Wolves are reeling in the last place of the league with 0 wins from 17 games. The club has been on a horrific run and have lost all their last five games.
