With Shubman Gill not in the best of forms in the shortest format in recent times, India opener Abhishek Sharma said that it was just a matter of time till the India Test and ODI captain finds his form and wins matches for the team in the ongoing South Africa series as well as the upcoming T20 World Cup. He said the same thing about skipper Suryakumar Yadav has well with the Mumbai Indians batter also going through a rough patch.
“I’ll tell you one thing straight away, that trust me, these two guys are going to win matches in World Cup (in February-March) and in this series as well,” Abhishek said.
“Because I’ve been playing with them since so long, especially with Shubman, so I know which match he can win, which conditions, irrespective of the team, whoever it is. So I have a lot of faith in him from the beginning, and I hope everyone will see him very soon and everyone will have faith in him,” added the world’s No.1 T20 batter,” he said.
Gill’s place in the Indian side has been questioned after he replaced a well-settled Sanju Samson from the opening slot. The India T20I vice-captain has just managed 291 runs in 15 innings at a strike-rate of 137.3 since his comeback to the side.
On Sunday against South Africa also, Gill couldn’t create much of an impact, scoring just 28 while skipper Surya scored 12 as India chased down a 117-run target set by the Proteas in 15.5 overs. This was after Abhishek had scored a blistering 35 off 18 balls, with Gill and Surya unable to finish the match quickly.
“There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers, and as I was batting, I knew that if I gave a good start here, the match could get over in the Powerplay, and that’s what happened….that was the plan for the rest of the batters, that they would just knock out or finish the match, so it was a very simple plan after that,” Abhishek said.
