Liverpool captain Virgil van Djik said that he was hopeful that Mohamed Salah will stay with the club after the African Cup of Nations. There have been doubts cast on Salah’s Liverpool future after the Egypt international had some choice words to say about the club and the manager Arne Slot a couple of weeks ago. Salah recently returned to Liverpool’s squad on Saturday after getting omitted from the Reds Champions League clash against inter Milan.
“Mo is going to AFCON and we all hope he’ll be successful there and he’ll come back and be important for us for the rest of the season. The other side of it is that we all know football and we have no idea what is going to happen. I hope that he stays because he is one of my leaders and still very important for the football club. But there’s more parties to this situation,” Van Dijk told reporters after Saturday’s match.

Salah had accused the club of throwing him “under the bus” and claimed his relationship with Slot had broken down in a fiery outburst after last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United.
After the match, coach Slot said he had no issue with the Egyptian forward. “For me there is no issue to resolve. He is now the same as any other player,” Slot said after the game. “I usually never say anything about what we talk about, I am not going to make an exception now. But I think actions speak louder than what has been said and he was in the squad again.
“When I had to make my first substitution, I brought him in and he performed as every fan including me would like him to today. The moment he is there I like to use him when we need him. When he came in, he had the performance like you would want him to to give.”
Salah will now join Egypt’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which runs until January 18. Liverpool next visit Tottenham Hotspur on December 20.
