WATCH: Ishan Kishan scores century as Jharkhand win maiden SMAT title | Cricket News

Jharkhand captain Ishan Kishan led from the front as his century helped his team defeat Haryana by 69 runs and win the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy for the first time. Kishan who opened the batting slammed 101 runs with the help of 6 fours and 10 sixes while Kumar Kushagra (81) and Anukul Roy (40) and Robin Minz (31) guided Jharkhand to an imposing 262/3 vs Haryana in final.

Chasing, Haryana were skittled out for just 193 with Yashvardhan Dalal’s 53 going in vain. Sushant Mishra and Bal Krishna were the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets apiece while Vikash Singh and Anukul Roy chipped in with 2 each. Jharkhand thus became the 12th state to win the country’s premier T20 domestic tournament.

This was a show of intent from the wicket-keeper batter Kishan who has been out of the Indian set up since 2023 having played his last T20I match against Australia in November 2023. He played his last Test against West Indies in September 2023 while his last ODI was against Sri Lanka in October 2023.

Both teams had superior runs through their league stage campaigns with Jharkhand notching up nine straight victories before the late blip against Andhra in their last Super League game. Despite a few defeats, Haryana qualified as the second-placed team from Elite Group C and even went onto top a group that comprised last year’s champions, Mumbai, to make it to their maiden final. The SMAT has seen similar dominant runs in the past too.

Invited to bat first, the Jharkhand skipper stitched a decisive 177-run partnership for the second wicket with Kumar Kushagra, who played the perfect foil with a rapid 81 off 38 deliveries to keep the pressure firmly on the Haryana bowlers.

The century was Kishan’s second of the tournament. The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form throughout the competition and topped the run charts with 517 runs from 10 innings at a staggering strike rate of 197.32.
